Be mindful of the variety of roles you play and how you code shift as you move from role to role. Remember also that the roles you play, and especially their prescriptions (i.e., with whom, about what, and how you communicate), differ considerably across cultures. So what it means to be a student in your culture is not necessarily what it means to be a student in another person’s culture. Take note of how your vocabulary changes and how your nonverbal communication is adjusted as you shift from your role as student to your role as friend.
