Question:
Local author Jared McGuire has just published a book called Greenways that provides people with tips on how to go green in their daily lives. To help promote the book, Jared will read excerpts at a book launch event to be held at a local community center. As part of his efforts to promote the event, Jared asks you to write a press release that he will send to three local newspapers and a community Web site.
Figure 7-9 includes answers to the 5W questions related to Jared’s book launch. You will use this information in the press release.
Follow the steps below to write the press release for Jared.
1. Open the file Practice_07.docx from the Project.07 folder included with your Data Files, and then to avoid altering the original file, save the document as Book Launch Press Release in the same folder.
2. Where indicated, enter your name in the Contact line.
3. Write a snappy but informative title for the press release. Remember to limit the title if possible to five words or less. A good title should motivate an editor to read the press release.
4. Enter the name of your town or city and the current date in the space provided at the beginning of paragraph 1. Write the first paragraph of the press release. Remember to include brief answers to all the 5W questions, and write the paragraph to engage the reader’s interest.
5. In paragraph 2, write a quotation from Melissa Renfrew, the science editor of the local newspaper (you determine the name of the newspaper). Melissa describes Greenways and stresses how people can learn what small changes they can make in their lives to save money and energy. You can adapt any of the information in Figure 7-9 for use in Melissa’s quotation.
6. In paragraph 3, describe Jared’s credentials. The purpose of this paragraph is to give Jared credibility so that people will be motivated to come to the book launch to listen to Jared read excerpts from Greenways. You can adapt the information provided in Figure 7-9 and make up additional information.
7. In paragraph 4, include a quotation from Jared that provides additional information about the book. Adapt information from Figure 7-9 and make up additional information.
8. In the final paragraph, include information about the cost of the book, the availability of refreshments at the book launch, and any additional information you have not already covered in the body of the press release.
9. Turn on Track Changes, add one comment to the document, insert a word or phrase, and then delete a word or phrase. You can choose to insert text to replace the text you delete.
10. Make sure the press release fits on one page. If the press release is longer than a page, either reduce the text or change the line spacing to 1.5. Print a copy of the press release, then save and close the file.
