Question:

4. Read the following extract from the instructions supplied with a small electronic pocket calculator and answer the questions below it. No special knowledge is required. Keep your answers brief.

Your calculator uses a standard nine-volt battery type PP3-P available at most camera shops. Do not use any other type. To operate calculator, turn power switch to 'ON' position. Switching off clears the machine.

To use mains adaptor, remove battery from calculator. Plug adaptor into electric mains and connect to calculator using the lead provided.

When battery weakens the display figures on calculator will go out.

Always remove a worn battery to prevent damage.

The calculator will work out your VAT, trade discounts, tax rebates, etc. To do this, use the percentage key. There is a memory key to enable you to store sub-totals.

If an error is made when entering a figure the C/CE key should be pressed once. This will cancel the entry but leave the rest of the calculation intact. Pressing the C/CE key twice will clear the machine ready for a fresh calculation.

The calculator is guaranteed for one year. For service, pack securely and return, carriage paid, to makers. No liability can be entertained for misuse or tampering.

(a) Members of staff in your office are permitted to use the calculator.

Prepare a short list of instruction telling them what to do (e.g. what checks to carry out) if they cannot get the machine to work.

(b) What do you think is the point of using the mains adaptor?

(c) Your employer decides not to buy a mains adaptor, saying 'It will limit the calculator's flexibility'. What do you think he has in mind?

(d) Explain briefly what you understand by two of the following: VAT, trade discounts, tax rebates, carriage paid.

(e) Rewrite the last sentence of the passage in your own words, paying special attention to the meaning of 'entertained' and 'tampering'.

(f) The battery has run out. The calculator will not work because the battery has now leaked and damaged the machine. Your employer proposes to send the calculator back to the makers (it is only two months old). Comment on his intended action.
