8. Listening for Evolving Slang in Speaking. Slang (specialized vocabulary and idioms used by an “in” group) is always with us. No organization, no college class, no group of students, no classroom can avoid terms that are added and omitted over one’s lifetime. Three people are needed for this assignment: a student who has worked for several years prior to returning to school, a student who has never had a permanent job prior to coming to school, and a minority student. Each should prepare a list of slang terms they have heard in their daily contacts with friends, in the classroom, or in their work environment.

After the class members have their own list, they should form a group and combine their slang terms into one list. Bring that list to class and let the members of the class guess the meaning of the slang terms, affirm whether they use the terms, and decide whether the terms are now out of date.
