For the exercises in this book, I have created numerous indexes using the ANES dataset (see Appendix A). One of them I call the Wiretapping Index, and it is made up of two variables. Take the two original wiretapping variables, recode them into new variables, and then create an additive index exactly like the one I created (where the higher number means more in favor of wiretapping). You know the answer; now all you need to do is figure out how to get there. Here’s a hint: keep an eye on the direction of the variables’ categories.
