G Jones et al. studied the effect of feed withdrawal on the live weight of pigs during the weaning phase. They weighed the pigs in the evening and the following morning after a time lapse of 11 hours during which time food was withheld. The standard deviation of the weights of 52 pigs in the evening was 2.0704 and in the morning 1.9599. The authors believe that ‘gut fill’ is a component of the variability in weight and that feed withdrawal could reduce gut fill and, therefore, variability. Test the authors’ belief at ???? = 0.01 and assume normality.
