A split-ring commutator is used in a dc generator to 

(a) Rotate a loop so that it cuts through magnetic field lines.
(b) Reverse the connections to an armature so that the current periodically reverses direction.
(c) Reverse the connections to an armature so that the current does not reverse direction.

(d) Prevent a coil from rotating when the magnetic field is changing.
