Dissolve the largest quantity of Epsom salt you can in a jar full of water. Fill two small cups with the solution, set them on paper towels, and suspend a thick string between them, with one end in each container. Let the string remain for several days. How do the deposits form from the solution? Where do they form? How is this similar to the formation of stalactites and stalagmites in caves?
