(a) When following the ‘efectual method’, you are expected to start your journey with the resources you can bring to the table as the point of departure. So, what do you have?

The frst step in answering that question is seeing yourself as a human resource and ask yourself: ‘Who am I?’ ‘What do I know?’ and ‘What can I do?’These questions aim to cover your skills (practical and social), capabilities, knowledge, appropriate experience and even your interests, engagement and passions.

Then ask yourself: ‘What fnancial capital do I have access to?’ That is the cash you can aford to lose, but also other resources and assets you perhaps do not own but are able to access and use (e.g. loan, hire, share, partnering, etc.).

List your answers to these questions.

(b) The second step is investigating your social and network resources and asking: ‘Who do I know?’ ‘What do they know’ and ‘What can they bring to the table?’ These questions aim to cover your personal network of family, friends and other appropriate contacts.
List the social and perhaps fnancial resources you have access to through your network.

Ask yourself: ‘What can I possibly do with these resources (a and b)?’
(d)
The resource map (list) evolving from answering these questions mirrors your initial start-up capital. It consists of a personal blend of human-, social- and fnancial capital.
Make a brief evaluation of your collected capital.
Follow up with a to-do list with suggestions of where and how to fll the gaps you anticipate.
