Our good news story of the year was receiving the $25,000 grant from the United Way, which allowed the shelter to stay open until midnight every night through the coldest part of the winter from December 15 until March 15. Being able to stay open those extra three hours each evening resulted in a 35 per cent increase in clients who visited the shelter last winter. We are proud to note that not a single citizen from Cuddy's Cove or Totem Bay died from exposure last winter, even though we had night-time temperatures that were 10 per cent colder than those measured during the previous five years. We believe that this improvement is directly related to our extended hours at the shelter as well as our outreach work with local and regional law enforcement agents.
