To help students internalize the cultural nature of illness experience, investigate a common “illness” (like hiccups) with no clear treatment or an everyday “health warning” (like avoiding sleeping with wet hair). Have students interview each other in class about the causes, treatments, consequences, and sources of information for the illness/warning. Compile all the answers to see how culturally similar or different people are.
