Figure 1 compares U.S. healthcare expenditure with that of seven other rich countries. The data are average dollars spent on healthcare per person in each country. (The data here are measured on a different basis to those on here .) The figure shows that the United States spends twice as much per person as Canada, Germany, France, and Australia; 2.5 times that of the United Kingdom and Japan; and three times that of Italy.




