Figure 1 Healthcare Expenditure Another feature of U.S. healthcare expenditure that you can see in Figure 1 is its very large public component (the blue bars in the figure). Government expenditure per person on healthcare in the United States is higher than in any of the other countries in the figure. It exceeds that in Canada, where selling private health insurance is illegal, and in Germany and France, where there is a greater acceptance of high taxes and big government than in the United States.
