Question:
1. What would you advise Lauraina to do about Kiara Sue’s situation?
2. What would you advise Lauraina to say to the other room attendants?
3. What human resources–related issues and labor laws might come into play in this situation?
“The problem, I’m afraid, is just age,” Lauraina, the executive housekeeper, said to Simon Andrew, the hotel GM.
“What do you mean?” asked Simon.
“Well, Kiara Sue has worked as a housekeeper in this hotel for over 25 years and has always done an excellent job. But recently she has had more trouble doing her share of the rooms in the time allowed. Some of the other room attendants are complaining because, after they finish their own rooms, they are assigned to help Kiara Sue finish hers.”
“She tries,” continued Lauraina, “but as you know, room cleaning is a tough, physically demanding job. Lots of the younger room attendants are challenged until they get the hang of things. In Kiara Sue’s case, she knows what to do—it’s just that she can’t do it as fast as she used to. The room inspectors are finding the quality of her work acceptable; it’s the quantity that is the problem. I wonder how much longer we can keep her?”
