The UK has always been unusual in having such a substantial occupational pensions sector. There are similar systems in the Netherlands and in the Republic of Ireland, but in most EU countries employers see no reason why they should be involved in the provision of pensions. Why do you think these differences persist? What arguments would you advance to persuade a company based in an EU country of the need to offer occupational pensions to employees in a new UK subsidiary?
