Question:

1. Is Anoushka depressed? We can sometimes use the word “depressed” loosely to refer to any intense sadness; however, can we say that she is depressed clinically? Anoushka is a 27 year-old Indian married female. She comes from an upper-class family and works for a multinational corporation. Her job is to manage a team of web developers for software solutions in the eld of logistics. When something goes wrong with the software it creates large-scale confusion and large nancial losses, and she has to make sure that the team of coders respond to emergencies effectively while at the same time continuing to improve the software. It is a well-paid, but highly demanding and stressful, job.

She has always been an achiever. She topped her class in school and graduated from college with honours. Her education was expensive, and her parents always pointed out to her that they were spending most of their savings just to give her a good start in life. So she has learned to have high standards for herself.

Her extended family, although westernized to a large extent, is still traditionally Indian and Hindu (by religion). Her marriage was not arranged, but the opinion of both the families was extremely important and was carefully considered by both herself and her future husband before their decision to marry was announced. They would not have gone forward without the blessing from both sides.

Her husband values traditional Indian culture, but he allows her to be independent and pursue her career. He has a small business in hospitality.

They have two children, one aged 7 and one aged 5. Although they have a babysitter, her husband expects Anoushka to spend more time with the children. He believes that his job is to earn enough money to give them a good education. He spends little time with his family because he is constantly at work, and Anoushka tries her best to combine her career with looking after the kids.
