5. Global warming has been a known problem for over a decade. Why didn’t the auto manufacturers undertake the ENERGY STAR program years ago?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program has helped the auto manufacturing industry increase its energy efficiency. As of mid-2010, the auto manufacturing industry had cut fossil fuel use by 12 percent and reduced GHG emissions by more than 700,000 MtCO2e/y, according to the June 2010 report by the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University (Boyd, 2010). The emissions reductions, which help to fight climate change, equal the emissions from the electricity use of more than 80,000 homes for a year.
