7. Despite all its limitations, GNP is of tremendous importance because it is an accurate tool enabling us to identify short-term economic fluctuations. Without such a reliable indicator, economic theory would be unable to determine the cause of economic slowdowns and economic policy would be helpless against them. Elimination of this limitation on both theory and policy is the great contribution of GNP.
