Take the name of the small business that you interviewed the owner and search for information about the business in public records with the Secretary of State's office and at the county courthouse. Don't forget to check lawsuits, UCC filings and federal records as well. After you've collected the information, go back to talk to the business owner and show them the information. Is the owner now more forthcoming about providing additional information on the company?
