Read the following discussion and give your response: When thinking of the word family and what it
Question:
Read the following discussion and give your response:
When thinking of the word family and what it means to me the first thing that comes to mind is people who are there for you in every type of situation. I do not think of family as being blood or marriage related. For example my best friend I consider family and she is no way near related to me and then I have cousins who are related to me who I have no seen in years. After asking some friends and my parents how they would define family they thought of family as the same way as I did. They said it is people you know you can count on and people you can be yourself around. I think society views family as more scientifically and saying that family is blood and marriage bonds. I think these definitions can be very harmful in certain situations. For example a person may move in with a friend’s family because of problems with their own family and that friend’s family actually becomes more of a family to them than their own. When they are asked about whom their family is they may reply that it is in fact their friend’s family members. Society may tell them that that is not their family and that their “real” family is their blood related people. This may cause the person to become confused and feel unwanted or misunderstood because they in their own mind think they have a family but when society tells them otherwise it may do more damage than good. I think there will always be debates about what a family truly is. As long as someone is being loved and supported by someone else or another group of people that is their family no matter if they are blood or marriage related or no related at all.
