Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” depicts a view of a community much different than normal. In order to characterize the rowdy townspeople, Hurston uses gender roles and social mobility to critique the judgmental world in which they live. The passage exploresa southern society’sfeelings,thoughts, and actions on the return of a mysterious woman who exchanged her satin dress for muddy overalls.At first the characters are sitting calmly on their porches beside the road and then their spiteful and full of malice when they recognize the mysterious women. As she leaves they become bitter and envious with hints of jealously and lust in the air.

Hurston commences the excerpt with a clever analogy between the dreams of men and ships. While most men’s dreams “sail forever on the horizon”, some lucky fellow’s dreams “come in with the tide”.However, women’s dreams “[are] the truth” and can change accordingly. This clear divide between the sexes is used to show how women are strong creatures who can control their wills and chase their dreams, while men live in reality hell bent on a dream that never may come true. A frame story is then used to introduce a woman who just “[came] back from burying the dead”, it was a sudden death where “their eyes flung wide open in judgment”. The author starts the story with death to symbolize new beginnings and rebirth in this mysterious woman who can be seen coming by the porch sittersbecause the sunhad “left foot prints in the sky”. These porch sitters are laborers during the daytime;they are rendered powerless and voiceless, equivalent to “tongueless, earless, eyeless conveniences”, while under the bosses watch. When the "bossman [is] gone," their humanity returns to them and theyhave the capacity to speak, act, and do on their own accord, they become “lords of sounds and lesser things”. As she came closer the women were able to recognize her and resentment filled their souls. The women envied how she didn’t seem to fit into society, yet she is beautiful and holds her dignity with grace. Instead of keeping quiet the women “made burning statements with questions and killing tools out of laughs”. The author then personifies the women’s words as well as uses a simile“words walking without masters; walking altogether like harmony in a song”, to show how heavily the words affected the mysterious woman. They ridiculed everything from her “hair swingin’ down her back” to her social class.However, when the young woman went to leave and walked through the gate to her home the porch sitters fell silent. The men lusted after “her firm buttock” and “pugnacious breasts”.The women still filled with envy, “took the faded shirt and muddy overalls and laid them away for remembrance”. It was a weapon that they could use against her in hopes of this woman becoming suffering mules like them.
