A personal code of ethics is a statement of your beliefs, values and intentionis to behave ethically. Here is how I would suggest you develop your code of ethics: 1. Take some time to think about your life, about who and what you are. For example, if I asked your friend to tell me about you, what would he or she say? You can think about this as the tralts that make up your personality. 2. Think about your values. What things are important to you. You can use the Rokeach Value instrument & to get ideas about which values are most important to you. Think about both Terminal Values (the end states that are important to you) and the Instrumental Values (the ways you go about getting what you want. You could even go through the exercise of ranking each of your values to give you the most insight. 3. Think about where you work, go to school, rest, play, etc. How do you relate and interact with the people that you encounter? Are there ways that you would like to make sure you continue to act? Are there things that you would like to eliminate? (e.g. stop gossiping) 4. Now that you have thought about and hopefully written down this information, write a two to three page single-spaced paper, It should consist of two parts. The first part is the philosophical portion. Here discuss what is important to you, what beliefs and values are driving you to be an ethical person. The second part is what can. be called the "I will section. Here you should identify the important ethical principles that will drive your behavior. For example. you might say. 7 will always respect the autonomy of people that I interact with and will never use someone as a means to an end if it also does not benefit them
