ABHMS' Justice Dialogues Focuses on Environment, Creation Care

"Care of the Earth: Our Responsibility and Response for the Well-being of the Environment" was the topic of American Baptist Home Mission Societies' (ABHMS) first Justice Dialogues of the year, which was held online Wednesday.

Discussion was led by the Rev. Karyn Bigelow, co-executive director of Creation Justice Ministries, Washington, D.C.; the Rev. Rebecca Driscoll, Creation Care Minister, The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts; and Scott Sabin, author of "Tending to Eden: Environmental Stewardship for God's People (Judson Press, 2010) and CEO of Plant with Purpose, a nonprofit Christian organization that works in developing countries to improve the lives of people in poverty.

For example, Proverbs 12:10 states, "The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel." Additionally, in Psalm 24:1, it is written, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

Therefore, eco-justice should be viewed through the lens of stewardship, where individuals are responsible for taking care of the earth and its resources in a way that is sustainable and just for both humanity and nature. This perspective also recognizes the importance of addressing systemic issues, such as environmental racism and unequal resource distribution, with an aim to promote a just and sustainable future for all.
