Aisha, a Lecturer in Law at City University, was short-listed for a $100,000 a year position as Professor of Tort Law at Bright University. Caleb, the Professor of Public Law at Bright University, was in charge of the applicant search and screening process. Seeking to obtain an independent assessment of Aishas abilities, he e-mailed Antonio a law professor at Reading University, where Aisha had studied to ask him to provide a reference for Aisha. Antonio knew that Aisha had been arrested and charged with stealing a law book from a shop when she was a student, though the charges were later dropped. Aisha had managed successfully to conceal this fact from her current employer and had not mentioned it on her application to Bright; although the employment application requested all information on any prior arrests or criminal convictions.
