Ann has been providing accounting help to Bill for free while she completes her accounting masters' courses. Ann graduates, gets a job with an accounting firm and passes the CPA exam. Ann writes to Bill and explains that going forward, Ann must charge Bill $300/hour for her accounting services. Bill responds that this fee is outrageous. However, Bill pleads with Ann to do some financial statement for Bill as soon as possible since Bill desperately needs to apply for and obtain a bank loan. Ann tells Bill she will start work and Ann starts working on Bill's statements. After Ann has spent 20 hours, Ann's boss informs her that to continue, Ann will have to get a $6,000 retainer from Bill. Ann writes to Bill to get this retainer and Bill says he does not have the money now and needs those statements as soon as possible. Ann's boss tells her to stop all work for Bill and Ann informs Bill. Bill is not able to apply for and obtain a bank loan. Bill's business fails. Ann's firm demands the fees for its accounting services and Bill responds that the accounting firm has to pay Bill for the loss of his business.
