As you know, we are now in our course section on Jim Crow Justice, building on our early work on dehumanizing and objectifying gazes. Think back on the material you have read in Messerschmidt, who looks at some of the gender, racial, and class dimensions of punishment and control in the era after the Civil War (the "Jim Crow" era). In class on Wednesday, we went over the "True Woman" controlling image and began discussing how, in the context of Jim Crow, former plantation owners had an incentive (because of the 13th amendment) to criminalize Blacks in order to re-enslave them. Constructing a false narrative about Black masculinity and the conquest of white women -- and the need to "protect" white women -- was central to that.
