'But nobody told me!' Ben's face is a picture of fury mingled with panic. 'The pigs from Home Farm havewhat?'
Sanjay, one of Ben's regular staff, swallows hard. 'They've broken through the hole in the fence between Home Farm and our paddock, and then through the open paddock gate into the barns. They got into the feed barn, and they've ransacked it. On the way, they've smashed the kiddies' play area and left it all covered with manure. Oh, and that footbridge over the stream at the start of the first nature trail - it's collapsed under their weight...'
Sanjay carries on, 'I only discovered it when I was locking up this evening and found the paddock gate open. Then I noticed the barn door was wide open as well ... and then I saw the pigs...' Having delivered the bad news, he finishes, 'I've called Home Farm, and they've sent some people over to round up the pigs - but they've been crashing through the nature trail area and doing almost as much damage as the pigs. They've gone now, but I'm not sure how it will affect the wildlife...'
'And we've got a couple of really big days this weekend,' Ben moans. 'How did it happen?' he asks weakly.
Georgina, as usual, has been sitting in the background, listening intently. Now, she starts asking questions. 'Who knew there was a hole in the fence?'
Sanjay swallows again. 'Well - I saw it last week, when I was taking that party of schoolkids on a hedgerow safari... but I thought that Yuri, the maintenance guy, looked after that sort of thing, so I didn't think to mention it...'
'Yuri's been off sick for two weeks,' Georgina says quietly. 'And the paddock gate?' she goes on. 'Why was that left open?'
'Oh, I expect somebody forgot to shut it after clearing up after the children's activities this afternoon.'
Before Ben can start blaming his staff for not shutting the gate, Georgina jumps in again. 'And they probably didn't know that there was a hole in the fence, because nobody had told them. So they wouldn't realise the extra importance of shutting the gate.'
'And the feed barn door?' Ben asks. 'That's supposed to be shut all the time!'
Again, Georgina to the rescue. 'But it does have to be opened to put feed in and get it out again,' she points out. 'Wasn't there a feed delivery due today?'
'Yes,' Ben says, 'but it didn't turn up for some reason - we were expecting it last thing this evening - so what was left in the barn is all we have now until Monday.'
'And all of that's either been eaten by the pigs or made unusable,' Sanjay mutters.
Ben carries on, 'And the play area ... and the bridge ... how are we going to get those repaired in 24hours?'
'More to the point,' Georgina says, 'did we know the bridge could collapse? Whatever would have happened if it had been full of children at the time?'
'Umm,' Ben mutters, 'I think I had noticed that it looked a bit rough... but I was so busy that I didn't really look properly... I was going to mention it to Yuri...'
'... but he's off sick,' Georgina interrupts.
There is a glum silence between the three of them for a moment.
'You know what the real problem is?' Georgina asks. 'We're not telling each other things we need to know. There's no standard way to report faults, or problems, or to alert people to increased risks. Those pigs next door are always a potential nuisance - that's really why we keep the paddock empty, as a sort of buffer zone, just in case the pigs break through the fence. But Sanjay here didn't tell anyone there was actually a hole, partly because Yuri was away sick, but mainly, I suspect, because it wasn't his responsibility?' She looks kindly at Sanjay, who grimaces in acknowledgement. 'And nobody told the team clearing the paddock that there was an increased risk ... or the people waiting for the feed delivery that the paddock gate was going to be open ... or, indeed, that the delivery wasn't going to arrive, so there wouldn't be anyone around to shut the door ... and nobody, apart from Ben and perhaps Yuri, knew that there might be a problem with the bridge.'
