You are the owner/manager ofZappa Electronics. The business has previously specialized in the repair of household entertainment items such as televisions, DVD players, projectors and sound systems. You offer a home installation and a guidance service. Your business is expanding and you are now responding to a demand for installing aerials on roofs. Though this service is proving popular to customers, it adds to the list of identified hazards in your work.
Therepair and home installationwork hazard list includes:
- exposure to poor wiring or exposed wires resulting in electric shocks or burns
- electric shocks when working on internal components
- trip hazards from electrical cords and wiring.
Regarding installingaerials, there are a number of newly identifiedhazards:
- if theroofis unstable then there may beriskof collapse under a person's weight
- if the weather is rainy, the roof can be slippery and falls more likely causing injury or death
- roofs with a steeper pitch pose a greater risk than a flat roof
- improper use of or lack of use of safety equipment and ladders can lead to injury.
You have 4 staff members on your team now. You are the manager but you are also a repair technician. You have a junior office assistant -Max- who mans the reception and takes care of the paperwork in your downtown storefront. You have one other technician -Jesse- who works in the room at the rear of the store-front with you and who also does home installations with you. And now with the new venture, you have hiredan aerial installer-Alex.
The aerial installation roles include:
- deciding on a suitable aerial or satellite dish and discussing the best position for it with the customer
- working at heights using ladders and roof ladders
- testing the strength of a reception or broadcast signal with a signal meter
- securely fixing equipment and running a connecting cable to the receiving system
- repairing damage caused by bad weather
- adding new signal reception points in buildings
- installing set top boxes for TV services and setting up the system
- connecting or upgrading digital receiver equipment.
With this business expansion in mind, your task is to establish a work health and safety management system for your existing and new ventures. You know that having workplace policies and procedures in place is important to ensuring a safe workplace not only for your employees, but for your clients. You know too of the importance of formalised procedures, such as an evacuation plan, manual handling policies or first aid procedures. You delve into WHS further with your growing team, wanting to involve them in establishing a thorough and effective Workplace Health and Safety management system forZappa Electronics.
You will be using risk and hazard identification techniques and you will implement a hierarchy of controls to deal with hazards and risks. You are going to induct and train team members in how to follow WHS legislation and workplace policies and procedures. Zappa Electronicsis going next level.
Task 1:
Refer to theCASE STUDY 1- Zappa Electronics. Put yourself in the role of the Person Conducting the Business or Undertaking (PCBU)- the business owner manager. You are to:
