Catherine Wagenseller, a nurse at an Arizona hospital, went on an eight-day rafting trip with several coworkers. Prior to the trip she had established a superior work record and had a very good relationship with her supervisor, Ms. Smith. During the trip, she became increasingly uncomfortable with certain activities such as nude bathing and heavy drinking, in part because of her Christian religious beliefs about modesty and alcohol. During the trip, members of the group, including her boss, created and performed a skit to the tune "Moon River," which ended with the group "mooning" the audience. After returning from the trip, the group performed the skit twice back at the hospital. Ms Wagenseller chose not to participate in any of these activities. Upon her return to work, her relationship with her supervisor deteriorated sharply, and she was eventually fired. Although she was an employee-at-will, she sued for wrongful discharge.
