  1. Consider the following scenario:

Pretend you are working for a company based in the United States, XYZ Marketing Co. Your company helps develop marketing campaigns for start-up businesses, which often don't have a lot of money to invest in marketing right away. You are the leader of a team within your company and your team has just been assigned to work with a high-profile start-up company. A lot of eyes will be on this project both inside of your company, and outside of the company.

You consider your cultural values to be (generally) similar to that of other United States citizens and you have been informed that you will be having a new employee join your team, and she has just moved to the United States from Austria (NOT Australia - be sure you get the spelling correctly). You know that there are going to be cultural differences between the American teammates and the Austrian teammate, and you want to do your best to understand what some general differences could possibly be. You remember your Human Relations & Effective Teams class from Normandale, and remember Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions as a tool which helps to explain some general differences between national cultures. To help you understand your new teammate, you will review the cultural dimensions of both the United States and Austria:

  • Visit this website:https://www.hofstede-insights.com/product/compare-countries/ (push the "CTRL" key and click on the link)
  • Enter both the United States and Austria (NOT Australia) in the "Compare Countries" box which reads "Type a country."
  • Click the button "Read More About Chosen Countries" to see more in-depth information about these countries.
  • Review the differences between the United States and Austria related to the following three cultural dimensions: Power Distance, Individualism, and Uncertainty Avoidance.
  • Based on the information, answer the following questions:
  1. What are some differences in behavior you could possibly see from your Austrian teammate related to Power Distance? Be specific and give examples in the context of this example scenario listed above.
  2. What are some differences in behavior you could possibly see from your Austrian teammate related to Individualism? Be specific and give examples in the context of this example scenario listed above.
  3. What are some differences in behavior you could possibly see from your Austrian teammate related to Uncertainty Avoidance? Be specific and give examples in the context of this example scenario listed above.
