Critical Analysis assignment

Title:Strudler, 2010, The Distinctive Wrong in Lying.

Your paper will need:

1. A title 2. An abstract 3. Argument Reconstruction 4. Final assessment

Keep in mind these characteristics of the paper that you must submit:

Critical

*Explain and assess whether the papers main thesis and premises are plausible or implausible, or whether it successfully solves the problem that it is supposed to solve. Say why. *Explain whether you agree or disagree with the mains point/theses of the paper. Say why. *Formulate your own ideas in a constructive dialogue with the paper. *Relate to other papers, ideas and issues discussed in lectures or other readings.

Analysis

*Summarize the papers main thesis and premises. *Present the problem/topic that the paper addresses. *Define the key terms discussed in the paper. *Use examples to clarify the ideas and concepts discussed in the paper. *Situate the papers contribution in the context of the topics discussed in lectures and readings.

Chose one of the readings for the class (the list is in the syllabus) and present, reconstruct, and assess the main idea and argument of that reading.

You can understand each component of your critical analysis in the following way:

Abstract (100150 words)

*This as the introduction to your paper. *Situate the paper. *Say what it is about. *State what you will do in your text.

Argument Reconstruction (400 words)

*Identify the central thesis or main idea of the paper. Thesis: main point that the author of the paper wants to convince you. *Identify the premises for the thesis. Include the relevant/key examples. Explain the technical terms. State how the premises support the construction.

Argument Evaluation (500 words)

*In this section youll evaluate the argument for both validity and soundness. Valid: the thesis must be true if the premises are true. Sound: besides being valid, the premises are true. *If its invalid, what missing premises can you supply? *Once valid, you can then ask: are the premises all true? *If yes: try to explain and respond to someone who would question one of the premises. *If no: say which premise is false and why.

Final Assessment (100150 words)

*This is essentially your conclusion. You should address the strength of the argument on offer, how you improved on it, and whether you ultimately found it sound/unsound.
