OBJECTIVE: Use the ARP utility on the command-line interface to examine and manipulate your Ubuntu Linux computers ARP table.
DESCRIPTION: ARP isnt specific to the Windows operating system and can also be used on a Linux computer. The computer used in this exercise was Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS, but the commands should work on any distribution of Linux. The terminal used was a bash shell, which is the default shell for Ubuntu. Note that this exercise used Ubuntu Live booting from a USB drive.

Open a command prompt window. (Use the Ubutnu search feature, type terminal and then double-click on the terminal icon. A command-prompt window opens.)

At the prompt, type arp and press Enter. Note the output.

Type arp -a and press Enter and notice how the same information is displayed, but in a different format.

Type arp -v and press Enter to view the verbose output of the command.

Attempt to delete the ARP table by typing arp -d hostname, where hostname is the name of your Linux computer, and then press Enter. Notice that the action isnt permitted. It requires root access to perform this action on a Linux computer.
6.
Type sudo arp -d hostname, where hostname is the name of your Linux computer, and then press Enter (you may be prompted to enter your password). Notice the ARP table is empty or greatly reduced.
7.
At the prompt, type exit and then press Enter to close the terminal.
