On a particular road there has been an average of 3 accidents per day. The distribution of accidents has been closely analysed and is believed to follow a Poisson distribution. (a) Use the Normal approximation to the Poisson distribution to nd the probability that two or less accidents occur during a two-day period. - (3 marks) The amount of time people involved accidents spend waiting for the wardens to arrive is believed to follow an Exponential distribution with a mean of 1.5 hours. ' ' (b) Find the probability that people spend at least 3 hours waiting for the wardens to arrive. (3 marks) (c) Find the probability that people spend between 0.5 and 2 hours waiting for the wardens to arrive. ' ' (4 mtaks) Upon their arrival on the scene of the accident, wardens are required to insert the details of the incident through an online form. A new electronic application has been recently introduced and tested among a sample of 6 wardens with the following durations in minutes: (d) Determine a 99% condence interval for the average time taken by the wardens to insert the details of the accident through an online form and state the margin of error of this estimate. - (8 marks) The soware' campany who developed the application is not convinced by the results of the study outlined above and requested that a larger sample size is employed. For this reason, a sample of 45 wardens was considered which yielded an average of 45 minutes and a standard deviation of 25 minutes. (e) Determine a 90% condence interval for the average time taken by wardens to insert the details of the accident through an online form and state the margin of error of this estimate. (5 marks) (0 Further to (e) above, what sample size would be required to keep the margin of error below 5 minutes if the same standard deviation and level of condence are assumed? (2 marks)
