The Take

We are living in a neoliberal free market economic system that dominates and governs everyday part of our lives and we have limited control over the market. The creation of the social economy is vigorous when the worker are marginalize in the mainstream economic system. The worker co-operative movement is born out of crises. Social economy was vital to the community to change people life. The reason to create social economy is because "social economy is a bridging concept for organization that have social objective central to their mission and their practice, and either have explicit economic objectives or generate some economic value through the service they provide and purchases that they undertake"( Quarter et al. 4). Creation of cooperative requires taking risk and problem solving skill and collective action that has been explore in the movie. This paper will critical reflect upon the documentary The Take how the employees occupied the factory and refuse the leave their work place and it's important of the social economy that were created by the worker cooperative during the Argentina economic depression when the neoliberal policy were able to support Argentinian.

The Take documentary Directed by Avi Lewis and written by Naomi Klein and edited by Ricardo Acosta could be an example of worker cooperative and how to start a cooperative and how the worker cooperative are won by the people who work in the factory. Further, the workers are the owner and one person one vote and everyone gets the equal salary. The national movement of the recovered factory was: occupied, resist and produce. Factory workers occupied the work place when the owners were bankrupt; the workers were resisted to give up the factory and fight for their right when their right were repudiated. Further, their cooperative movement allow them to produce product in the factory when there was economic crunches in Argentina. This documentary provides the evidence that capitalism has failed to address the people needs. Government prioritize foreign investor than it citizen.IMF, World Bank and private investor play major role to devastating economic crises in Argentina. According to (2004) most of the loan was conditional to cut austerity measurement to reduce budget deficit, open loan and the government were servicing debt (Klein). That means foreign investor and international institution could raise the interest rate if they do not have the confidence of the borrower countries. Further, the government of Argentina's were servicing debt by paying international lander which requires the government to use its revenue to pay off interest and cost of the borrowing of the loan.

Capitalist ideas of utopia free market not surely for the majority of the people. According to Rosto (1960) the theory of modernization refers to the process that all countries go through similar stages of development from traditional to modern (p.10). He claims that the development as significant and measurable economic growth and emergence of social, economic and political institution. From the documentary we could assume that the path to the modernity is how the west defines the prosperity. Dominate theory of Modernisation claims that all countries go through similar stage of development from traditional to modern (Rosto, p.12).Capitalist assumes that the global system is a level playing field. However, capitalist ignore the fact that not all countries are economically capable to compete with the developed nation. The movie illustrated that Argentina is a prime example how they could not compete with the global capital market as a result country face economic meltdown.

In order to bust private and foreign investment government prioritize certain group of people more than its citizen. To illustrate that "multinational corporation and bank were able to offshore 48 billion dollars there were no government regulation to stop them" (Klein). However, government were success to freeze Argentinian people bank account specifically those who were struggled to meet their daily needs. It proved that the Neoliberalism policy and regulation only applicable to the poor people. Argentina's government give the subsidies to private factory and still the private company makes no money in the business and neglect the worker right.

The city give the permission to Burkman worker to occupied and produce in the factory. Friedman (1970) disregards the vitality of the business social responsibility and refers to social responsibility as a dangerous doctrine which he refers to as it undermines the freedom of a nation and prevents the creation of wealth (p.32). Friedman (1970) assumes that the corporation's ultimate goals are to maximize shareholder's profit, free to create wealth, privatize and deregulate and most of all he claims that managers have no right to use shareholder money to spend on social issues (p.33). What Friedman fails to understand is that there are many types of economic market system and there has always been market existed in the past but neoliberal free market system violates our democratic freedom and brings misery to the nation (p.45). As Polanyi (1994) refers market as humans' relation how human make a living interacting within their social and natural environments (p.48)

In global free market economic system so call a competitive market. How would be the developing be able to compete with the developed countries if the market is not free for the developing countries as they are highly regulated by the international institution such as European bank, IMF and World Bank. Klein (2004) explains that "Argentina is a prime example how a rich country has made poor" (Klein). For instance when the developing or underdeveloped countries borrow money from the international organization they were given condition, terms and most of all it was confidential than how is it a free global market. As Klein explains that when Argentina's government borrowed from IMF and World Bank, the condition of the loan was financial liberalization, trade liberalization, and privatization and cut the budget deficit which will inflate economy.

In the documentary The Take we could agree that modernization is a misunderstood concept of progress. In the movie amply that privatization and the free market economic system is harming the world. In the name of economic progress, they are leading us toward progress trap. Their ideology of modernisation is to the accumulation of private capital wealth, mass production, liberalization of the financial market and so on. For example, when Argentina want to file bankrupt international financial organization such as IMF and World Bank persuaded them not file for bankruptcy so that they take advantage and exploited public resources by privatisation. Maximization and accumulation of wealth was merely a trade-off to cause harm to the developing countries thus undermining the democratic system. We could conclude that "self-regulating market demands nothing less than the institutional separation of society into an economic and political Sphere (Polanyi, p.72).This documentary teaches us that any business can turn into cooperative at the same time make money for the organization and build a strong link to the community. Therefore, establishingSocial economy is vital of alternative development which meets the need of human sectors or human need rather greedy corporation make money only for themselves.
