I need to answer this discussion board with more than just I agree or disagree. Any suggestions?
Turnover is a huge issue that is addressed by an HR department, if managed improperly, it can be a huge detriment to a firm. There are a few ways to describe different kinds of turnover, for instance involuntary turnover would be an employee that was fired, and voluntary turnover would be an employee that quit. In addition to this, functional turnover is lower-performing employees leaving, and dysfunctional turnover is higher-performing employees leaving. No matter how you look at it, turnover is a bad thing, losing key employees, will put a lot of pressure on other employees who have to fulfil that employees duties. Not only this, but even losing a 'bad employee' has negative aspects for a firm, mainly this is created by the costs associated with hiring and training a new employee to fill that spot.
I think that many companies could definitely do a better job meeting the wants and needs of the millennial and gen z generations. I think that the reason a lot of companies are dealing with staffing shortages now is because younger people wont just put up with some of the working conditions our parents would. First of all, there are a lot of opportunities to start a small business and be your own boss, especially through online shopping. Another thing is that the long term benefits our parents and grandparents could get like a pension are pretty much non existent now. Now factor in low pay and poor working conditions, you can see why gen z and millennials aren't sticking around at companies like our parents did.
Turnover is something that would definitely be of interest to a job applicant, high turnover at a potential employer would be a red flag most of the time. It raises questions about employee-supervisor relations, are supervisors doing a poor job and causing employees to quit? Is there a bad work-life balance? Is the pay worse than other industry competitors? All of these are reasons for high employee turnover and could push applicants away from a company. In addition to this, all of the aforementioned issues are going to be huge to current employees as well, since they are the ones directly effected. All of the problems associated with high turnover are going to be important to ownership/stockholders as well. A company with high turnover won't be working as efficiently as it could be and money spent on training new hires/severance pay will cut into profits. For these reasons, it is in everyone's best interest to keep employee turnover low.
