Shown below is a rough sketch of the 2500 gallon, jacketed, water-cooled T2 reactor without controllers, alarms, instrumentation, etc. Assume you are part of the team tasked with a complete redesign of the process following the accident. The goal is improved design for maintaining both product quality/production rates and better safety. In no particular order or priority, please address the following items. Provide explanatory text in each case. 1. Atmospheric vent: should it be a rupture disc or pressure relief valve? Where should the discharge of the vent end? How would you determine the vent rate needed to size the pressure relief? We're not actually sizing the device, but wanting to know how to figure out the required vent rate. You could make a quantitative estimate as well. 2. Design a robust control system for the process, including a professional sketch. This should include measured and manipulated variables with appropriate controllers where justified. 3. Describe and justify any redundancies you might propose. 4. Show alarms and any other safeguards deemed appropriate. 5. If a redesign of the process reactor geometry is proposed please show and justify those details. 6. Although we are not costing items at this stage please identify anything from above, or any additional items, that might be considered useful but also might be cost-prohibitive. In other words, think a little bit about cost-benefit-risk considerations
