Case studies:
- Rosie is an 82-year-old woman who lives alone. Carers provide care twice a day and help with cleaning and shopping. She has few relatives, seldom has visitors and reports feeling lonely and isolated. She is mobile, but her sedentary lifestyle has led to weight gain, which is preventing her from moving around easily. She sits for most of the day, and the carers often have to encourage her to get up. She has been diagnosed with Type II diabetes and regularly snacks on processed food, including sweet biscuits and potato chips.
- Paul is a 21-year-old footballer who lives in a share house. He worries about his performance and has difficulty asking for help. He is frustrated with his fitness progress compared to some of his teammates. He trains hard throughout the week and maintains a balanced diet. However, on weekends after the game he binge drinks with his teammates and the hangover that ensues leads to poor food choices, low mood and irritability. He works part time as a carpenter and finds himself financially limited.
- Simon is a 48-year-old divorced father of two. He has competed in a number of ultramarathons and triathlons until five years ago when he got an injury. Gradually over the past five years, he has gained 15 kilograms and drinks most nights and smokes occasionally. He does not cook for himself, preferring to grab something on the go or to order takeaway. He works in a job where he has had prolonged stress for many years and reports sleeping poorly.
