Answer:

Email stands for electronic mail and involves exchanging mail (or messages) electronically between two or more users. Like with other distributed technologies, protocols have been developed to specify and standardize every aspect, such as the various transfers and exchanges of data between senders and receivers. First of all, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) protocol specifies which type of content (ex. text or HTML) that is used in the message or in the attachment to the message. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) handles sending the email message from the mail client software on the sending client to the mail server software on the sending server. The sending mail server then accesses the public DNS database to look up a mailing exchange (MX) record which provides the destination IP address that corresponds with the email address that the message needs to go to. SMTP also governs the process of sending the message from the sending server software to the receiving server software. Next, the receiving mail server software waits for the receiving client software to contact it in order to retrieve the message using Post Office Protocol (POP). Lastly, when the user accesses email on a web browser (ex. G.mail) as opposed to a email client application (ex. Outlook), the browser performs a similar function as POP using the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).
