In the wake of energy transition towards decarbonization to address climate change, each company in the energy industry needs to think about its respective strategy to cope with the eventual target of becoming a net-zero emission (NZE) contributing organization. It is true that the Paris Agreement mostly require countries to adopt policies that are consistent with their respective pledge - i.e., nationally determined contribution or NDC, and as such some countries have already made the commitment to achieve it at certain target in the future (e.g., in 2050 for most of the EU, Japan, and Korea, or in 2060 for China); however, there are more and more companies that follow suit, i.e., to achieve NZE ambitions. BP is one among those companies with such pledge, and it has been very open and transparent in terms of how BP is going to do just that in the future, with specific (interim) targets that need to be achieved by 2030 and beyond.
BP's strategy can be found on its website https://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/what- we-do/our-strategy.html, along with well scripted derivatives on the approach, underlying
fundamentals, as well specific measures in a broad but visible major targets within its envisioned road map to attain the goals. The Questions that each syndicate needs to address in this assignment: 1. What would you think about this bold reorientation in BP business strategy? Will this serve well to the company's future ambition and aspiration? Why do you think BP is doing what it is doing, and what are (or can you distinguish) the drivers behind it? 2. What would be the impact of such bold move of BP and other similar companies' situation, e.g., Amazon, Walmart, General Motor, and more recently, Fedex, which
have made similar statement: https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate- environment/2021/03/05/more-than-50-companies-have-vowed-be-carbon-neutral- by-2040/, to other companies that have not made any statement at all? Can you relate
this specifically to the company that you are currently associated with? Within the company that you are currently associated with, what would be the impact to the specific unit that you are currently being part of?
3. Last but not least, what would you think the trends that are exemplified or shown by BP and other energy companies with similar aspirations have an impact on your professional career? And how are you going to start adjusting to it?
