It is often said that the criminal sentences given to minority offenders are more severe than those given to whites. You examine how this works in a federal district court. You take a sample of 80 bank robbery cases where the convicted offender was white and a second independent sample of 80 cases where the convicted offender was either African-American or Hispanic. You find that among 80 whites in your sample, there is an average sentence length in months of 67 with a standard deviation of 18.9, while in your sample of 80 African Americans, there is a sentence length in months of 73 with a standard deviation of 20. Test the alternative hypothesis white suspects are sentenced on average to fewer months than African Americans. Use an alpha of 0.05. You can assume that the two population standard deviations are equal (1 2). What do you conclude?
