You've been given a hypothesis about English grammar. You are being assessed on your ability to construct effective sentences for testing your hypothesis. Linguistics is all about testing what you can and cannot say in a language. Your choice of your example sentence is critical for linguistic analysis. If your sentence has too many confounds, it could end up being useless for testing your hypothesis. We are interested in your ability to construct clear, targeted examples to test linguistic theories. 3b. Logically evaluate arguments, hypotheses, and theories in linguistics. In creating your acceptability judgment experiment, you should be evaluating whether experiment results based on your stimuli would really help you make conclusions about your research question. If you fail to eliminate obvious confounds in your experimental items, this will be an indication that you have not evaluated the implications of your experimental design well enough. 3c. Design a simple acceptability judgment experiment in linguistics. Context. It's often helpful to get quantitative data of acceptability judgments. Are you able to build basic stimuli for an acceptability judgement experiment in linguistics? Do you know how to build an effective Likert scale for an acceptability judgment experiment? As a future "everyday linguist", are you aware of potential confusions lay people have about acceptability judgment tasks? Does the choice of your example sentence and context help eliminate confounds in your experimental items? Do your test items have basic control for various factors that could affect the grammaticality of the sentence? Do you know what the purpose of a filler item is? What you propose as a filler item will tell us whether you understand its purpose. You have noticed recently that some people say on accident to mean 'accidentally', and others say by accident to mean 'accidentally'. You want to construct an acceptability judgment experiment to see which of the two constructions is more (descriptively) acceptable/grammatical to Gen-Z English speakers. Your hypothesis is that on accident is more acceptable in English for this group. You are creating stimuli for this experiment. The idea is that what you give as your answers in Q2-Q4 would be presented to your experiment participants to test your hypothesis. Data.
