Let's say that you work for a charity or non-profit organization and your boss tells you that you need to convince an audience to donate to your charity. You are going to have to persuade them that your charity is important and worth their time and money. The objective for this assignment is to practice persuasive speaking, organizing and outlining a persuasive pitch using Monroe's Motivated Sequence, evaluate and select research to support main ideas/claims in a speech, build a sound argument, apply persuasive techniques to persuade an audience to take action, and delivery confidently through expressive nonverbal communication.

Persuasive Speech Instructions

Step 1: Understanding Your Purpose & Choose a Charity or Organization

  • Your goal is to persuade the audience to donate toLaura's House Inspiring Hope and Empowering to End Domestic Violence
  • Second, make sure it is SOLVING A PROBLEM or social issue that is occurring. Need to then identify that problem and research the issue this organization is working towards solving.
    • When giving a persuasive speech, you want to first focus your attention to the problem, not the solution (the solution in this case will be donating to this organization/charity). You want to BUILD a case that a problem exists first that then makes your audience feel that there is a NEED for a solution (this is a common persuasive tactic). With that being said, you want to make sure you also research the problem.

Step 2: Research Your Topic and Outline (write) Your Speech

  • write the speech in outline format following Monroe's Motivated Sequence.
  • You will write this speech as a quick 3-5 minute pitch. You are trying to persuade us to donate toLaura's House Inspiring Hope and Empowering to End Domestic Violence. This is not meant to be a long winded presentation. Instead, it is meant to be a short 3-5 minute pitch on why we should donate to your charity by following Monroes Motivated Sequence.
  • As you begin outlining your speech, please make sure your persuasive speech meets the following requirements:
    • Research:Research your topic to support your argument. Your speech must includecredible outside researchto support your main points/claims.You will be required to have a minimum of 2 credible outside sources.These sources must be cited properly in your outline and orally cited in your speech.**Your speech will be checked for plagiarism.
    • Monroe's Motivated Sequence:
      • You must outline this presentation following Monroe's Motivated Sequence. Please refer back toLecture: Monroe's Motivated Sequence.
      • There are 5 steps to outlining Monroe's Motivated sequence:
        • STEP 1: ATTENTION-This is when you will begin your presentation by getting our attention and alerting us to the PROBLEM. Do NOT bring up the charity/organization in this step. You want to build up to the solution (step 3). Grab their attention (alert them to the problem), connect topic your audience (why should they be concerned?), establish credibility (what qualifies you to talk on this topic), and state a thesis (what's to come?).
        • STEP 2: NEED-This is when you tell us about a problem in society and the severity of this problem. The goal is to make your audience feel that there is NEED for a solution. This is where I should be seeing persuasive tactics such as logos and ethos. For example, if you are talking about homelessness, give us facts and statistics on how bad homelessness is. Prove a problem exists.
        • STEP 3: SOLUTION-This is when you will introduce your charity/organization to your audience. This is the relief to the problem. Tell us about the organization, their credibility, and HOW they are working towards solving the problem addressed in step 2. This is great time to pull in pathos and ethos by sharing testimonies and facts on how many they have helped so far. You want your audience to believe in this organization!
        • STEP 4: VISUALIZATION- This step is purely designed for persuasive tactics. This is your PATHOS-emotional appeal to the audience. This is when you will help your audience visualize what will happen if they DO or DO NOT donate to this charity/organization. For example, if we don't help then what impact will that have on the problem? If we do help, what impact will that have on the problem?
        • STEP 5: ACTION- This step is when you ask your audience to HELP and to take ACTION. This is your pitch-tell us how to donate and what we can do to help. Be specific and clear. This is also your last-ditch effort to persuade us that your charity is the one we should donate to by closing with a powerful, memorably closing statement.
    • Please remember, I am not asking you to give me a long-winded presentation about the organization. This is not an informative speech. You are, in 3-5 minutes, going to persuade us to donate to this charity. Monroe's Motivated Sequence is designed to help speakers write a persuasive speech to persuade an audience to take action. That is what you are asked to do here.
