Monsanto Corporation produces a plant fertilizer, GROW-X, which is sold by the kilogram. Average monthly production costs and sales volumes follow: Raw materials Labour and overhead Monthly inputs of raw material Monthly output of GROW-X Selling price of GROW-X $1.20 per kg $36,000 48,000 kgs 40,000 kgs $5.60 per kg The residue of 8,000 kgs (48,000 - 40,000) is of inferior quality and is being sold to a chemical processing company at a price of $1.50 per kilogram. Recently, Monsanto's research and development team have discovered a processing method by which the residue can be purified and sold as a product called GROW-Y for $5.00 per kilogram. For every 10 kilograms of residue processed, 7.5 kilograms of GROW-Y is produced. The purifying of the residue would however increase monthly production costs by a fixed amount of $16,000. Required: Determine whether it is better for Monsanto to sell the residue as is or to further purify it and sell GROW-Y instead. How much more money will Monsanto generate by making the correct decision
