National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics

Deciding what (if anything) counts as "morallyobligatory" is a principal concern of ethics. The National Association of Realtors exists in part to impart a code of ethics upon its membership. The idea of duty to fellow members, clients, and the public is evidenced in the sub headings within the National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The sub-headings all have the word 'duty' figured prominently. The assignment this week is to read the NAR code and comment upon anything within it that you found to be enlightening. What did a particular passage or phrase illuminate for you that you did not know before? Did anything within the code clarify your thinking or give you a perspective? Any surprises? Upon observing the sizable commissions involved, and the attendant behavior of real estate agents while shopping for a home, one perceptive attorney client of mine remarked to me that the business appeared to be "very cutthroat." Things must be pretty bad when an attorney thinks your business is too cut throat, if you know what I mean. In this jungle of a business, does a code of ethics make sense?
