I. (30%) Formulating Problem and Goal Statements Description: Participants listen to a series of dialogues between a doctor and patient to develop problem and goal statements. Purpose: - Practice generating and testing problems and goal statements. - Identify common pitfalls for the development of problem and goal statements. - Understand the ultimate impact of problem and goal statements on project performance. Materials Required: - Problem Statement Worksheet (see below). - Doctor/Patient Dialogue Sheets (see below). Doctor/Patient Dialogues Dialogue I DOCTOR: What seems to be the problem? PATIENT: My wife told me I should see a doctor, so I made this appointment. If I do not see a doctor, she is going to leave me and go home to her mother. Dialogue 2 DOCTOR: Why would your wife want to leave you and go home to her mother? PATIENT: She does not want to go home to her mother, but for the last three weeks she has been irritable and cranky every morning. When I told her, she was cranky she threw a broken alarm clock at my head. Dialogue 3 PATIENT: I do not think she is getting enough sleep. She told me I snore so loud I shook the alarm clock off the nightstand. I guess the poor old gal just cannot sleep without the nice soothing tick of the alarm clock. 1. Develop a problem and goal statement by using the worksheet after each of the three dialogues. 2. Allow yourselves 3 to 5 minutes per dialogue. 3. Prepare a report. For your report, provide photographic evidence of your team development process in this activity. Include the answers to the Discussion Questions below. Discussion Questions: - What was your final problem and goal statement? - How would differences in these statements impact the future actions of the doctor, patient, or patient's wife? - What are the pitfalls and difficulties of developing a good problem and goal statement? - What natural human tendencies conflict with developing a good problem and goal statement? - How would a well-written or poorly-written problem and goal statement impact on the improvement project? - How could a problem and goal statement impact the relationship between the team and process owner? - What are some effective techniques and methodologies for drawing out meaningful problems and goal statements
