Note that heat energy is not in an object, but is the energy that is being transferred from one object to another. Methods of heat energy transfer are a subject for the next chapter. For now, it is sufficient that you realize that when objects of different temperatures are put in contact (or mixed) with one another, they come to the same temperature by a transfer of energy from the hot to the cold object.
