Problem 5 a) Water resources of a city is mainly supplied from three different sources, namely A, B, and C. The amount of water supplied from these sources are random variables with means 40 msfsec, 5t} m3fsec, and 10 msfsec, with standard deviations 10 msfsec, 15 mifsec, and l m3fsec, respectively. The water supplied from A and the other two sources are statistically independent, while B and C has a covariance of 2 (msfsecf. Overall, 40%, 50%, and 30% of the water coming from sources A, B, and C are used as drinking water, while the rest are used in parks and recreational facilities. Find the mean and the standard deviation of the total water used for drinking (T ). b) Repeat the question for part (a) if B and C are statistically independent. e) Assume the amount of water sedimentation (S) accumulated at the water supply facility of the city is assumed to be a function given as: S = (NICE) ,r 11.3 and all variables are statistically independent. Find the mean and the variance of S using Taylor series expansion and rst order approximation (i.e., FOSM method]
