Here's the way it looks now, since I know you'd want to know, since you're the reason I moved here, since it was you who loved cities and tall buildings and myriad faces, and since it was you who said go to the Big Apple, get that degree, but don't forget to write. I didn't forget. I sent something off to you. And that, too, was a postcard. Just before you went into the hospital for good, remember? It was a picture of those two big buildings, the ones we had stood atop, you pointing your shaking finger north to Boston, saying, I think I see the Prudential. All around us was sky. You told me how you took Mom to its top, to cure her fear of heights.
Let me tell you how it looks now. Where I'm sitting, on Bleecker and MacDougal, you'd never know by merely looking (though if your eyes were closed and you breathed in, you'd know something had happened here). But today there is no sign of any of it anywhere, no rubble, no trucks, no bucket brigades, none of that awful white dust. I can't even spot a flier. Just tables and chairs - a bit emptier than usual, but out and open for business, as everyone keeps saying. There are some little kids in costumes-though rarely without an adult hand hovering nearby. And seeing them made me think of you, the time you were here last, in '98, when you came to visit me before I graduated.
