Preliminary process development work has been completed using a pilot-scale 2.5 " in extruder equipped with a 5 hole underwater pelletizing die (PellCo PC-10-05) that produces 250lb/hr. The equipment specifications are listed in the attachments. For market development purposes we need to scale production to 4750lbs/hr of pelletized beads. Our production plant has an 8 " extruder that can process resin at rates up to 5000lb/hr and pressures to 5000psi. 3. Subject to the constraint that the average shear rate experienced by the material must be the same for both the lab and pilot plant systems, use your knowledge of similarity and scaling to determine (a) the dimension of the die holes in the full-scale system, (b) the number of die holes required in the pilot plant die to meet production requirements
