Problem 1 Variants of the stick problem

(i) A stick of length L is broken at random into two pieces. Find the expected length of the shorter piece.

(ii) A stick of unit length is broken at two points. Find the probability that the three pieces obtained after

breaking the stick will form a triangle. (

Hint: No need of continuous random variables to solve this

problem, use concepts from geometry.)
